Chickens and Puking

What a title, huh?

Anyways, I am here to pick your brains.

The Squid’s been having a puking problem.

It started about the time I stopped nursing, so it wasn’t that hard to figure out that it was a dairy intolerance.  When we switched to almond milk it helped clear it up from the puking every day to only throwing up one to two times a week.  The problem is that this has been going on for almost three months.  I’ve switched him over to a gluten-free diet, just in case…… but does anyone else have any ideas what might make a relatively healthy one year old throw up?  I’d like to feel like I’m doing something while I wait on the referral to the GI/allergy specialist to go through.

Here’s a picture of him from back in December, when I was still nursing him, before we started having allergy (that’s what I think it is) issues:

And here’s a picture of him from last week:

Keep in mind that the photo above is AFTER he started putting weight back on.  Anyways, I’m open to any and all ideas or stories.

Moving on to less serious topics:

On a whim, I decided to do a little research into my my new town’s Chicken Laws.  Yeah, yeah, they’re called “city ordinances”.

Whatever.  Quit being so technical.

Guess what I found out?

Three chickens.

Three chickens, no roosters, and up to six chicks.  We can have three chickens at our new Hobbit House!

Do you have any idea how happy this makes me?

I want one of these:

and I want one of these:

and then I want one of those plain-looking white ones that lay a stupid amount of eggs so I can have lots of these:

After a really long week, you have no idea how happy this makes me.

I think I’m going to name them “The Beckies”.  Is that narcissistic?  Or is it the opposite of narcissism?

Who cares?  Yaaaay!  I’m going to be moving out of California AND getting some chickens!

  1. It could be a reflux issue, as well as a dairy issue. And, you can have reflux that presents as nausea/vomiting, not as pain and burning.

I'm on PPI (proton pump inhibitor) medication that helps with the nausea (when I'm not pregnant, obv) and is merely a really strong reflux med.

Also, straight liquids will come back up more easily than thickened liquids, so is there any way you can thicken his milk (custard-ise it?) and see if that helps?

  2. Wish I could help with the barfing baby, but I just don't know.
Next year i'm getting three Dorking Hens, just because of the name. It so fits in my family…
They're going to be named Dorri, Dorcus and Doreen.
We're building our coop this summer.

  3. I am so jealous! [about the chickens, not the puking squid, in case there was any doubt]. We aren't allowed to have chickens. I thought getting one of those weird looking ones might work because I could just say they were some other kind of bird.

  4. We don't feed milk to Kaeden just yet-instead his morning drink of choice is goat's milk keifer, I buy the ones that are flavored with blueberries or peaches-basically drinkable yogurt, going on Veronica's point of thickened liquids. It is a bit more pricy than milk, but a 5$ bottle lasts 4-5 days for Kaeden (he gets about 10 ounces every morning before his real breakfast). Hope that helps 🙂

Have you considered Max's reaction the to Beckies? Also, you could look at Arcanas-not the prettiest, but they lay blue eggs-I swear, that's what my MIL has and I ate all the time when we lived with her.

  5. Poor Squid! I dont have much help for you but I feel bad for both of you.

P.S – you really want chickens? I hate chickens, I think that there only saving grace is that they taste good! Good luck to you 🙂

  6. The Beckies… Awesome ring to it. We just refer to ours as “The Ladies”. Trying to come up with a name theme for them for this year, so as to help me keep track of age. One theme per year = easier to keep track! I am thinking maybe names from Buffy this year… What do you think?

  7. Yay for chickens!

We're about two weeks in to our chicken adventure- I had no idea they grew SO FAST. The six are getting to be a bit too big for the tub they're in- we're trying to hurry to get the chicken pen done so they can move outside in the next week or so.

  8. My favorite chickens are the Aracaunas. Very docile, sweet chickens that lay eggs in shades from green to blue. I think their feathers are beautiful. My second favorite are Barnvelders (sp?), then Speckled Sussex (speckled eggs too!), and Buff Orpingtons are really nice and docile too. 🙂
I'm with Veronica on trying a thicker liquid. I always put rice cereal in my babies milk/formula/whatever to thicken it. Of course that was a long time ago, I don't know if that is still “recommended” anymore or not. 🙂 Good luck! Poor baby…

  9. My daughter puked from the time she was born until a little after she turned 6 months old. We switched from one formula to another trying to find the right one (I didn't breast feed and this was some 34 years ago)finally at about 6 months old the doctor switched her to whole milk. He basically just threw up his hands because he didn't know what else to try. And she threw up once with her first bottle of whole milk, but after that, no more puking.
